Beckett set to open Ribble Link Margaret Beckett, MP

THE multi-million pound Ribble Link will be opened tomorrow (Friday) by Margaret Beckett MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The link joins the Lancaster Canal to the rest of the inland waterway network for the first time in history. Margaret Beckett, pictured, will arrive on a barge on the canal at about 2pm on Friday, September 20, and will be met by Preston Mayor, councillor Jonathan Saksena.

There are plans under way to restore the Lancaster Canal as far as Kendal which in turn will boost tourism and bring economic social and environmental benefits to the North West, according to a spokesman from British Waterways.

[Editors Note: see The Old Tram Road for more details of how the Ribble Link completes part of a plan first laid out more than two centuries ago.]
